Owen — Game On

Owen — Game On

Owen Ng founded Game On in 2022 and currently studies at SPCC. Dedicated to provide sports opportunities to underprivileged children, he hopes to empower the children’s lives and give them a better and brighter future.

Game On HK is a student-led initiative dedicated to offering sports opportunities to underprivileged children. Our mission is to arrange training sessions led by a team of passionate secondary school students, both experienced and aspiring. Through these efforts, we strive to empower children to pursue their sports dreams by providing them with valuable training and mentorship. Game On is not just any ordinary organization, but a platform, connecting underprivileged children with sport-trained volunteers.

Around a year ago, I took part in a 3on3 basketball tournament. Our team defeated every opponent easily and was crowned champions. However, feeling remorseful about our advantage, I refrained from celebrating with my teammates since our opponents lacked proper sports gear–wearing PE white shoes instead of the fancy basketball shoes we had, not to mention their absence of a proper basketball team jersey.

I want to bring out the message to youngsters that they can make an impact on society through their hobbies and interests. Volunteering should not be limited to: education, giving out free lunch boxes, helping out the homeless. It can also be about sports.

I remember my friends and others laughing at my initiative and telling me that it was impossible. They believed I was too young to be able to handle that much work: from hosting meetings with other large-scale NGOs to creating a platform for volunteers and children. This was the biggest motivation for me because I wanted to prove them wrong. Moreover, when I first started Game On, we did not gain that much trust from community centres. Even though we faced a lot of challenges and rejections, we did not give up, striving to success.

You are your own person, there’s no need to be swayed by external influences. Because there will always be people who belittle you, tell you that you can’t, tell you that you’re too young for it. The most important thing is to move on from those criticisms, and move on and do what you want to do most. Volunteering should not be limited to: education, giving out free lunch boxes, helping out the homeless. It can also be about sports, something youngsters feel passionate about.

I’d like to express my immense gratitude to Stephen Chan, ex-social worker in St. Barnabas Society and Home. When I first founded Game On HK, we approached SBSH. Stephen and his colleagues did not hesitate and agreed to collaborate with us despite the fact that our organization was completely new. With the help of Stephen, Game On HK started reaching more community centers and gained much more experience in coaching children.
